Reading an expert profile: useful questions beyond impressive titles

General Informational article

Consider qualifications, experience, scope and communication style together when choosing a suitable professional.

A profile containing many certificates does not automatically describe the right service for your needs. An attractive photograph, a large following or a long list of titles cannot replace a few practical questions. The aim is to find an appropriate service, not simply the most impressive-looking profile.

Match the service to your concern

Nutrition planning, psychological assessment and career goal-setting are different activities. First describe what you need help with in one sentence. Then check whether the profile identifies relevant education and experience. It is reasonable to ask who issued a certificate, what the professional's background is and where the service's boundaries lie. Professional titles and permissions can differ between countries.

Understand the working approach

A description should offer more than a promise of success. Ask how an initial meeting works, which age groups the professional supports and which languages are available. It is also useful to know what happens if another service would be more appropriate. Treat guaranteed results within a fixed number of sessions, or one method offered for every concern, with caution.

Make a simple comparison

Try three columns: my need, information available, question to ask. If discussing feelings in German is difficult, being able to speak Turkish may matter. If you can only attend in the evening, appointment availability is relevant. This approach compares services against your circumstances rather than price alone.

The first contact matters too

Clear answers, respect for your boundaries and understandable fee arrangements are useful signs. Reviews may provide perspective, but they cannot guarantee your experience or outcome. If the first meeting does not feel like a good fit, you can discuss that or consider another professional. For a health concern, choose someone with appropriate health qualifications. General advice, coaching and clinical treatment should not be treated as interchangeable services.
